HATSHEPSUT AND THE VALLEY OF THE QUEENS

Inside my house
nineteen by twenty-six
the walls are lined
with ancient pictures
a photo gravure
of unknown faces
wild Indians to brides
lost strangers
with curious
expressions
I´ve adopted as kin

There are jars full of ashes
of sacred pets
unborn babies
borrowed bird´s nests
brimming with
cardinal feathers
pyramids
Madonnas
that line
the altar above
my kitchen sink

A stained glass angel
in a China red dress
reigns over my
roadside attraction
guardian of memories
and new spirits
baptizing them
as they enter
through the door

I often wonder
if by honoring
their vanished
existence
I will be greeted
family style
down the road
at the end
of the tunnel
